Sprawl

Sprawl impacts counties everywhere.  The Sierra Club has taken the lead nationally on sprawl's impact on the environment.  Follow this link for more information on the Sierra Club Solution to Sprawl.

The American Farmland Trust works to stop the loss of productive farmland and to promote farming practices that lead to a healthy environment.  Click here for more information on the American Farmland Trust and their efforts to control sprawl.

And the Department of Defense is a new Smart Growth partner.  As they say, "With development drawing ever closer to many of its facilities, DoD has become increasingly concerned about the ill effects of sprawl hampering its ability to effectively carry out its military training mission."  The Department of Defense established their "Readiness and Environmental Protection Initiative—a groundbreaking drive to improve test and training space while protecting the surrounding habitat, agricultural land, and open space."

Other active organizations include statewide advocacy groups such as 1000 Friends.  More than half the states have such organizations.  A few websites are listed below.

1000 Friends of Iowa

1000 Friends of Maryland

1000 Friends of Minnesota

1000 Friends of Oregon

1000 Friends of Wisconsin
