Board of Directors

Barry Jacobs,

board chair, has been a member of the Orange County NC Board of Commissioners since 1998. Now in his fourth term, he has served as Chair and Vice-chair a total of six times. Mr. Jacobs also served on the North Carolina Commission on Smart Growth, Growth Management and Development and served for two years as the president of the Triangle J Council of Governments. He has worked as the Caretaker at Moorefields, a house and grounds on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, as a self-employed journalist, primarily covering sports but also history, environment and politics for 30 years, and is the author of several books. He holds a Bachelors’ Degree in history from Duke University.

 

 

Bob Freimark,

board secretary, is a Program Associate for the Wilburforce Foundation. He holds a Masters of Public Administration in Natural Resource Policy from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of Montana. Prior work includes Senior Policy Analyst of the Pacific Northwest Region of The Wilderness Society; forest management  positions in Oregon, Washington, and Montana with the U.S. Forest Service and the Washington Department of Natural Resources as well as positions with the Trust for Public Land and EPA.  He has been a leader in Northwest conservation campaigns to preserve ancient forests and wild lands.
  

 

      

 Peggy Beltrone,

is the President of Exergy Integrated Systems, the technology concepts and commercialization arm of the Exergy group of companies. It was established to foster the deployment of new and advanced renewable energy technologies that better integrate into the lives of people who use them, and the communities and landscapes in which they are placed. She is a nationally known and trusted voice on rural renewable energy development and sustainable communities. She championed rural economic development on the Board of Cascade County Commissioners for nearly 16 years where she directed the County’s wind energy marketing program. She chairs the Community Wind initiative of the 25x’25 National Alliance (25% renewable energy in the US by 2025) of over 900 energy, agricultural, and environmental organizations, serves on the US Department of Energy’s Wind Powering America steering committee and on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Farm Ranch and Rural Communities Advisory Committee. Beltrone is a former board member of the National Association of Counties (NACo).

 

 

Steve Wilensky,

 is in his second term on the Calaveras County CA Board of Supervisors, representing a rural district in the Central Sierra.  He is the owner and operator of Humbug Creek Farm, an apple farm and cider mill, a founding member of the Foothill Conservancy, the co-chair of the Sierra Nevada Forest and Communities Initiative, a board member of the Upper Mokolumne River Watershed Authority and on the steering committee of the Sierra-Cascades Forest Dialogue with the US Forest Service.

 

 

 

 

 

Karim Shumaker,

 is the Gold Beach Center Coordinator at Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC). Karim serves on the SWOCC Sustainability Task Force and has developed new classes related to sustainability, and continues to work to expand environmental and sustainability class offerings. She is a member of the Port Orford Ocean Resource Team’s (POORT) Community Advisory Team as the education liaison. POORT is the recipient of NOAA's Award of Excellence for Non-Governmental Organization of the Year. Karim was employed as the administrative assistant at Conservation Leaders Network for six years and brings a deep commitment to the organization and its mission, and a first-hand understanding of the how the organization works.

 

Jane Weber,

Weber holds a Forestry Degree from the University of Montana and has done master’s work in outdoor recreation there also.  She started her career with the Forest Service in summer 1977 as a crew boss on the Lolo National Forest working with the Youth Conservation Corps on projects like trail construction, range fence installation, removal of fish barriers, thinning projects, tree planting projects.  She transferred to the Rocky Mountain Ranger District in 1982 and served as a crew boss for thinning and tree planting operations, did stand examinations and timber sale layout.  She also helped with vegetative mapping of urban interface along the Rocky Mountain Front for fire predictive modeling and fire behavior predictions in the Bob Marshall Wilderness.  In 1983, she became the Public Affairs Specialist for the Lewis and Clark National Forest and oversaw the development of the first Forest Travel Plan.  Weber served as Public Information Officer on many fires, one of particular note was the 1988 Canyon Fire which burned across three Ranger Districts on three National Forests.  She also conducted many public meetings with environmental and industry groups with divergent views on oil and gas development.

In 1996, Weber became the Assistant Forest Planner and served as Interdisciplinary Team leader and NEPA coordinator on numerous environmental assessments and EIS documents for range management, timber sales and fire salvage sales.  From 1998-2010, she served as the Director of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center establishing a unique public-private partnership and extensive volunteer program for which the facility received many awards.
